Maddy - 5 years old
Wow... 5 years. Maddy really likes to hear stories surrounding her birth and as we tell them to her, it still feels like it was yesterday. Here is a snapshot into what Maddy is like at 5 years old.
Favourite Activities: Maddy still loves anything to do with crafts or drawing. For her birthday we got her a simple 'how to draw' book and she's already drawn all of the animals in the book. She is constantly creating something whether it is a picture, decoration for the house or some contraption made of our recyclables. She is also very fond of dancing and enjoys putting the music on and busting out her moves. She is mostly into the graceful moves with long sweeping arms and twirling like a ballerina, but when the music is faster, she has this little shoulder shake that reminds me of a Bollywood dancer.
Playing with others: In the past, Maddy was usually drawn to the older kids on the playground. Especially the ones that were up for playing with someone younger. She really likes this girl named Jocelyn from down the street who is 14 years old. (Luckily for us, Jocelyn has always been very wonderful with Maddy and a great role model.) Lately, Maddy has had a lot of fun playing with babies and toddlers and this is something new for her. She loves to make them laugh and gets a kick out of hearing the babies giggle at her funny faces. She getting better at initiating friendships with others on the playground who are her own age. When she was younger, she was often too shy to initiate play with others.
Maddy the runner: She definitely gets this from Josh. She loves to run and she'll be quite content running laps around the soccer field at the park. She used to run back and forth the length of the soccer field, but now she runs around the entire perimeter. She's gotten so good, that the other day we 'went for a run' for our recess break. She ran with me for about a full 10-12 mins without stopping. We did a little loop down the street, over to the high school, to the park and then back home. I told her we could try that loop a couple more times and then add a little more distance later on. She was very keen and I'm happy to get a little extra exercise in there too.
Routines, routines, routines: Maddy is big on routines. It's great because she now knows the drill in the morning. She is extremely proud that she can do her 'morning chores' all on her own. This includes getting herself dressed, bed made, room cleaned, breakfast, teeth, hair and cleaning the toys in school room. Some mornings she'll be extra diligent about getting her chores done when Ethan is messing about because she wants to show that she is listening and he is not. We try not to make such a big deal about it on these days, but deep down I'm happy because I'll take whatever I can get.
Our little actress: For a while now, Maddy has been pretending to take a nap or go to bed at whatever hour Ethan needs to go to bed. She's very good at pretending that she is tired too and will go to her room as I take Ethan to his room. She'll wait there until I come out of Ethan's bedroom and then sneak into the living to play or draw. This is usually the time that she gets to have bubblegum, or go to Starfall on the computer. Just the other day I told her she could help me make the icing for her birthday when Ethan was napping. At around 12:30 she was fake yawning and asking Ethan if he was tired yet. I think she will be really bummed out when Ethan stops napping, even more so than me.
Nature Girl: For her fourth birthday Maddy's grandparent bought her a Maplelea doll called Taryn. This doll comes with a little journal that tells of her personality, hometown and favourite activities etc. Taryn's biography is filled with details about nature because Taryn is from Banff and loves to go hiking. I'm not sure if it's because of Taryn, or just because, but Maddy also claims to love hiking. She did do very well and the whole time we were hiking in North Vancouver, she was talking about Taryn and how she was just like her doll. I'm so glad she didn't get the "party-girl-loves-to-go-club-hopping" doll for her birthday instead. Just kidding of course.
Stayed tuned for pictures from Maddy's birthday.
