My First Hack

So I have another furniture blog that I like to read up on and I like it because you don't actually have to build from scratch. It's called IKEA Hackers and basically people send in their ideas on how they've modified and re-purposed different products from IKEA. It's pretty cool to see some of the ideas. Some of just plain funny like this...

A bee keeper's outfit

...others are pretty neat, like how these kitchen islands were turned into bathroom vanities.

We wanted to get Ethan a train table for his birthday but I saw this hack a while back. I really like how much storage it has so I gave it a try. Basically it was MDF to attach to the bottom of two Trofast hanging shelves. Then using another sheet of MDF to make the top. Add some trim to finish off the edges and add legs. It wasn't any cheaper to make this than to buy an actual train table, but it has a lot more storage. The table is a beast. It is super heavy and definitely not going anywhere. Here are the pics I remembered to take along the way.

The base with legs are attached.
The top is on and the holes are filled and sanded.

I can't wait for him to get it. Mostly I can't wait for the trains to come up off the floor and be contained in one area. Right now it's so heavy and big that we don't have anywhere else to hide it before his birthday. So I just threw a blanker over it and shoved it up against a wall in our playroom. He thinks it's a bed. :)
