Big Sis
A couple of weekends ago we took Maddy to a sibling preparation class. The idea of the class was to teach kids between 2-6 yrs a little bit about what to expect when a new baby comes home. They covered things from what the birth may be like, to what babies need, to how things at home might change. The class was a little too advance for Maddy, but since then we've gone to the library and taken out some books. Who knew that Maddy would be so interested in the books. I think that she is really beginning to 'get it'. The other day Josh asked her "How come the baby cries?" and she replied "Clean diaper". If you keep asking she'll say things like "Milk" or "Hug". When we ask her "Where does the baby drink milk?" she'll say "Mama's boob-boob".
The biggest surprise for us was when she started singing this song she made up. I think they must sing 'Freres Jacques' at daycare because it's not one that we sing at home. Anyway, she changed the words herself.
Now if we can only teach her how to change a diaper...

22 months

In a couple of days Maddy will be 22 months old!! Wow things sure are fun at this age. You can no longer consider her a little baby, (well she'll always be my baby) but she's definitely a little person with her own thoughts, interests and ideas. Here's an update on Maddy:
Eating: She continues to have a good appetite and eats most foods. People often comment on how much she eats and for that I'm grateful that we don't have to worry if she's getting enough. She LOVES fruit and more recently she's found her love of "agocado" (avocados). The most fun thing is that she now knows that she can make requests. Before she'd pretty much eat whatever we put in front of her. Now, she likes to see if she can have just one more cookie or treat. Lucky for us, she seems to accept when we tell her that it's the last one.
Sleeping: The recent heat wave threw her off a little but we seem to be back on track. Sometimes she'll need two naps but generally it's one a day (secretly I don't mind the 'two nap' days since I'm gettting more and more tired lately). She'll definitely let us know when it's a two nap day. Lately I've been taking our Peapod (a little tent for sleeping in) to play dates and so far she goes down for a nap in there with no problem. It's been great because the long walks for naps in the stroller were really killing my back. I'm really glad that she goes down easily at home or out and about.
Reading: It's amazing how much Maddy can remember from the books we read. She can finish off sentences and even sometimes words in the middle of sentences. She loves all kind of books like Robert Munsch, board books and even non-fiction books. The best part is that she can remember the names of the books and tell us which one she wants to us to read. The other day I sat down on the couch with her and together we read. I read my book and she sat beside me and read her book!! So fun. I can't wait to do that with her more. After about 15 mins, she was ready for me to read to her again.
Singing: She's ever expanding her repetoire of songs she can sing. She now likes to sing along to the songs we listen to in the car. It definitely makes listening to kids songs day in and day out worth it. I love driving in the car and listening to her try and follow along with the tunes. I don't even know what songs are on the radio these days because she doesn't like it when I have the radio on. She'll call out "Mookicks please mama!"
Activities: This summer has been fun because we can now do some activities together instead of her she sitting there watching. Some favourites are colouring, sidewalk chalk in the backyard and building blocks. The other day I made a batch of playdough and she loved it! I'm not that great at making things yet, but I'm can make a mean 'round ball'. She loves that so she's always asking me to make them. After a while I showed her how to squish the balls into pancakes. So there we sat, me making round balls one after another and her squishing them into pancakes.
Another favourite is 'Find Dada'. Pretty much hide and seek, but we only let Josh do the hiding. She covers her eyes and I count with her. Then she goes running off to find Josh. Sometimes Josh needs to help her by calling out to her, but I love hearing the pitter-patter of her feet as she runs around calling "Dada, I'm coming!"

Speaking: Maddy is like a little sponge when it comes to learning new words. She's also getting into the hang of stringing words together to make a sentence. One time she said "Maddy watching Dada brush his teeth" as she ran off to the bathroom. She'll mix up the order of the subjects in her sentences and say things like "Mama kicking Peanut". Cute, but I'd hate for people to think that I actually kick the baby!
Well good for you if you are still reading. Sorry for the long post. I don't think we'll have much of a 23 months post (depending on Peanut's arrival) so I thought I'd make this one a good one!
