Ethan-Two Years Old

I've started this post many times over and each time I felt like I couldn't quite get it right in the way that I wanted. I'm just going to write about what Ethan likes to do lately in the hopes to capture what he's like at 2 for us to remember down the road.

  • Ethan is definitely trying to figure everything out for himself. Everything we do, you'll hear a "No, me" as he tries to tackle the task on his own. Things like climbing into his car seat and doing up the buckle, putting ALL the fixings onto his taco, unzipping himself out of his sleep sack.
  • He's talking so much now and we can even understand what he's trying to tell us most of the time. One thing that I've noticed is that he hasn't said his own name yet. Whenever we ask him what his name is, he'll always reply with "Me". He doesn't even like to repeat it. Funny guy, is he trying to tell us something?
  • I love that he's trying to sing along to song in the car. My favourite though is "Ba--Ba, Boa....Fi it!" (What do you mean you can't figure it out? It's the theme song to Bob the Builder. Duh...) He's also loves Head and Shoulders and ABC.
  • His favourite stuffy right now is he beloved Woa-Woa. Doggie goes to the doctor and is subjected to many shots, he goes to the hairdresser for haircuts and goes through the entire pregnancy and birthing process many times over. Poor Woa-Woa is looking rough, but that's probably part of his appeal.
  • Trains and Trucks. Can't get enough of them. I try to take him to see as many construction sites as I can because he gets such a kick out of them. Today we went to see some on Kingsway and he practically sat down in the middle of the street to watch. I had to pick him up and finish crossing the drive way with him before letting him get a good seat. He also loves his trains and when you mix the two together like the fire truck train set from Thomas, he's in heaven.
  • We go for walks around the neighborhood and I once made the mistake of just letting him sit in the middle of the sidewalk when he got tired instead of carrying him. It was fine because it was a very quiet street in the middle of a week day. The problem is that now whenever he's tired he'll just shout "Chaw-chaw, sit!" and demand that we take a break no matter where we are.
  • One game he likes to play is to run buck-naked from the bathroom after he's had a bath and jump in our bed. Then I'll call out "Do you have your bum on my pillow?!?" and he'll squeal with laughter. Ahh...the fun times around here.
  • Lastly he LOVES to do whatever Jeh-Jeh is doing. Anything she does, he's right behind. For the most part Maddy loves it too because he'll go along with whatever she's doing. The only hard times are when she actually wants time to herself and he doesn't understand that. Luckily he can't open the door to her bedroom yet because the knob is a little tricky.
Now that Maddy is in school everyday I'm home with the kids, Ethan and I can have our bonding time back. The other day I took him to Starbucks to kill some time and got him a cinnamon straw and some milk. Seeing him sitting across from me with a huge smile on his face was enough to melt my heart. He was just so happy to have a milk and a treat all to himself. It was like he was saying, "If this is what it's like with no Jeh-Jeh, I could get used to this!" I'm really loving this stage with Ethan and I'm so excited to be home and spending some alone time with him each day. I love you Ethan!!

Ethan's Birthday Week

This year it felt like Ethan's birthday was a week long celebration. I'm sure it felt that way to him and probably was a little confusing to him. Not that he minded, I'm sure. We had a family party on the Tuesday before his actual birthday because it happened to be a day that everyone could make it. It was the first day of school for me, so Josh took them out for the day, in the afternoon Oma and Opa arrived from Revelstoke and then in the evening Gong-Gong and Po Po came for dinner and cake.

Because he's so obsessed with trucks, his cake was a no-brainer for me. It HAD to be an excavator cake. Good thing for Google and watching enough episodes of Cake Boss on TLC. He was so excited to eat the cake that he blew out the candle before we could even finish singing the first line to "Happy Birthday". He must have known that we wanted to get some pictures of him and the cake before cutting it, because he did sit there for a while without crying or demanding cake (I don't know, perhaps it was all the paparazzi flash bulbs going off). I did notice that he was in no mood to smile though. He just had "eat. cake. now" on the brain.

The birthday boy patiently waiting for us to finish singing to him. Notice the candle is already out!

After cake was time for presents. He was spoiled with both a train table AND a big boy bike. We had one happy boy.

On Thursday we brought a cake to Lucy's so that he could celebrate with the daycare friends. I'm sure he was thinking, "My birthday? Again?" Not that he'd complain because they got to have 2 pieces of cake. He also came home with a ton of gifts and I'll never forget him coming in the door, immediately running for his Woa-Woa and then exclaiming, "Two Woa-Woa!!" as he showed us his new stuffed dog along with beloved Woa-Woa.

On Saturday was his real birthday so we had to stick with our tradition of bringing breakfast into his room while singing Happy Birthday. He was definitely confused by now, but as soon as he saw the muffin with a candle in it, his mind changed to "Eat". Since Oma and Opa were still in town, we decided to pack up the Westies and head to Whistler for an overnight, quickie camping trip.

The weather was gorgeous that weekend and we were initially heading to Nairn Falls (20 mins past Whistler). I don't know what it is with us and bad luck driving to Whistler for camping, but this time there was a bike race going on and so parts of the highway were closed. They were still letting traffic through, but it was S.L.O.W. Part way we decided to just camp at Alice Lake and head to Whistler the next day. We luckily got the last campsite and enjoyed some time at the playground and beach before dinner. The next day we went to Whistler Village for the morning and lunch before heading home.

What a wonderful way to celebrate Ethan's 2nd birthday. Happy birthday my dear sweet little boy! We love you so much. xoxo

Summer Wrap Up

We've been doing so many fun things this summer and I just don't have the energy to blog about every thing, but I do want to preserve the memories. So here is a wrap up of our summer time fun in pictures.
The Greek Festival on West Broadway.

We spent a day at the Vancouver 125 Celebration in Stanley Park.

We have a ton of random pics with random mascots. The kids get a real kick out of seeing them still.

We have a seasons pass to the Burnaby Village Museum Carousel.

The museum entrance is free this year, so we pop in for a treat from the ice cream parlour.

Waiting in line for Fish and Chips in Steveston

Worth the wait!

The ice cream sundae bar was a big hit.

One weekend we went to Playland with cousins Frances and Pippa

Ethan had a good time, but he was dying to go on a ride all by himself like Jeh-Jeh. Next year, Ethan, you'll be tall enough.
Everyone waiting for lunch

We went for a little hike around Rice Lake

Ethan says, "Beeeg!"

Maddy loves going to see Ana at our local park. She is a crafting girl!

Ethan loves to do the messy crafts too. I love that the mess is left at the park and not in our living room.

Water parks are great fun, though the weather has to be really hot for the kids to enjoy it.

They played so well together this day at Rocky Point Park.

We spent a day at Cates Park on the North Shore. The kids had an awesome time looking for baby crabs.

The dress up clothes are back in rotation in the playroom. They love it.

At the farm in the PNE

The SuperDogs show is a big hit around here. Ethan is still talking about the 'Woa woas".

What a great summer it's been. So many awesome memories.
